Exhaust pipes
The pipes carry the gases from the manifold along the car towards the tailpipe, passing through the rest of the system on the way.
Silencer and catalytic converter
The silencer (muffler) quietens the sound of the travelling gases, while the catalytic converter turns the most harmful emissions into less harmful ones.
Tailpipe
The end of the system, where the gases leave the car. Blowing, rattling or a sudden change in exhaust sound are all signs it’s time for a check.
